Introducing the Grade 8 Advanced Maths Programme by Advantage Learn

There is a group of learners in every Grade 8 classroom who finish their Maths work before everyone else. They get it. They ask the deeper questions. They are not struggling: they are waiting. And if no one challenges them soon, that spark can quietly dim. That is exactly why we built the Grade 8 Advanced Maths programme at Advantage Learn.

Watch the webinar below to walk you through the programme in full, then read on for everything you need to know.

Why Start an Advanced Maths Programme in Grade 8?

Most learners who go on to study Further Studies Maths (AP Maths) in high school say the same thing in hindsight: they wish they had started thinking differently about Maths much earlier.

The habits and thinking patterns that make a learner successful in advanced and university-level Mathematics are not built overnight. They are formed gradually, one challenging problem at a time. The cognitive foundations for AP Maths and beyond, things like abstract reasoning, mathematical language, and structured problem-solving, need to be laid well before Grade 10.

Grade 8 is the ideal starting point. It is the first year of high school, a year where learners are forming their academic identity and where the ceiling on Maths potential is almost never reached.

This programme exists to make sure the foundations are built, starting now.

What Is the Grade 8 Advanced Maths Programme?

The Grade 8 Advanced Maths programme by Advantage Learn is a structured, expert-led maths extension course for high-achieving Grade 8 learners in South Africa. It is not remedial support or extra homework. It is a deliberate academic challenge designed to extend capable learners beyond the CAPS and IEB core curriculum and prepare them for the rigorous thinking that advanced mathematics demands.

The programme focuses on two cornerstone areas that build a strong problem-solving mind: mathematical language and abstract reasoning. These are not just Grade 8 skills. They are the foundations of every advanced maths course a learner will encounter from Grade 9 through to first-year university.

What the programme does for your learner:

  • Extends learners who are already performing well and need more to work with
  • Challenges the way learners think about Maths, not just what they know
  • Develops the problem-solving mindset required for higher Mathematics
  • Prepares learners specifically for Further Studies Maths (AP Maths), which begins in Grade 10 under the IEB
  • Leads directly into the Grade 9 Advanced Maths programme, creating a clear, intentional learning pathway from Grade 8 all the way through to matric

Who Teaches the Grade 8 Advanced Maths Programme?

The programme is delivered by Trish Pike, Advantage Learn’s expert Maths educator and one of South Africa’s most respected Mathematics educators.

Trish brings over 40 years of experience teaching both Core and Advanced Maths. She served as Head of Department at Kearsney College and Thomas More College, two of KwaZulu-Natal’s leading schools, where she was responsible for departmental results at both. She built South Africa’s first NBT Maths preparation course in 2013 and authored the Grade 8 to 12 Neo Series Maths textbooks now used in multiple schools across the country.

Trish understands the full arc of a learner’s Maths journey, from high school through to university, and she has built this programme with that arc in mind. Learners who have been taught by Trish consistently describe her teaching as a turning point in their relationship with Mathematics.

“Trish teaches not only content but a way of thinking that you can carry through to your final matric examinations.” — Advantage Learn Student

What Does the Programme Cover?

The programme runs across Term 3 and into mid-Term 4 via weekly live online lessons with Trish Pike. It is structured around two core pillars: mathematical language and abstract reasoning, with content that progressively builds the thinking skills required for Grade 9 Advanced Maths and ultimately Further Studies Maths from Grade 10.

Programme outline:

Mathematical Language Learners develop the ability to read, write, and reason in the precise language of Mathematics. This includes understanding mathematical definitions, notation, and logical structure, the tools that make abstract thinking possible and that separate learners who truly understand from those who only compute.

Abstract Reasoning and Problem Solving Learners are challenged with problems that cannot be solved by formula alone. They practise identifying patterns, constructing arguments, and applying reasoning across unfamiliar contexts. This is the thinking that advanced maths at any level demands and that standard curriculum rarely develops explicitly.

Extension Beyond the Core Curriculum Content deliberately extends beyond the CAPS and IEB core syllabus, introducing learners to mathematical ideas and techniques they will encounter in Grade 9 Advanced Maths and beyond. The goal is not to accelerate through the curriculum, but to deepen how learners engage with it.

Where Does This Programme Lead?

The Grade 8 Advanced Maths programme is the beginning of a longer academic journey, not a standalone course.

Completing Grade 8 Advanced Maths sets learners up directly for the Grade 9 Advanced Maths programme, the next step in building toward full Further Studies Maths (AP Maths) in Grade 10.

Further Studies Maths (AP Maths) is an IEB-accredited subject that goes beyond the Core Maths curriculum and culminates in a formally examined matric subject in Grade 12. It is internationally benchmarked: UK ENIC has assessed it as comparable in demand to UK A-levels, and it is a prerequisite for South African applicants to the University of Groningen. Locally, it strengthens university applications and scholarship candidacy in fields like engineering, actuarial science, data science, and finance.

The full pathway looks like this:

The earlier a learner begins building toward that level of mathematical thinking, the stronger their foundation when it counts most.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is this programme for?

The Grade 8 Advanced Maths programme is for learners who are already performing well in Maths and want to be extended and challenged beyond the standard curriculum. It is not a remedial or catch-up programme.

Does my learner need to be in an IEB school?

No. The programme is open to all Grade 8 learners in South Africa, regardless of whether their school follows the IEB or CAPS curriculum. The content and thinking skills developed apply across both.

Is this the same as AP Maths?

Not exactly. This programme is specifically designed to prepare Grade 8 learners for the thinking and problem-solving approach required for AP Maths (Further Studies Maths), which officially begins in Grade 10. Think of it as the foundation that makes AP Maths achievable.

What if my learner misses a session?

The live sessions are the core of the programme, but if you have specific questions about absences or catch-up arrangements, contact the Advantage Learn team directly at advantagelearn.com.

How does this link to the Grade 9 Advanced Maths programme?

This programme is designed to lead directly into Grade 9 Advanced Maths. Learners who complete Grade 8 Advanced Maths will have the foundational skills and mindset to continue on the pathway toward Further Studies Maths in Grade 10.

Is This Programme Right for Your Learner?

This programme is the right fit for Grade 8 learners who:

  • Are performing well in Maths and are ready to be extended beyond the standard curriculum
  • Want to be challenged with content and thinking that goes deeper than what school offers
  • Are curious, motivated, and willing to work at a higher level
  • Are considering Further Studies Maths (AP Maths) or university courses in Mathematics, Science, Engineering, or Finance

It is not for learners who are struggling with the standard curriculum. It is for learners who have already outgrown it.

Grade 8 Advanced Maths Starts 20 July 2026

The Grade 8 Advanced Maths programme by Advantage Learn launches on 20 July 2026. Enrolments are open now.
