Ty Haynes’ journey is a Further Studies Maths student story that challenges the common belief that only “top maths students” should take on academic extension.

Ty matriculated in 2024 as the Deputy Head Boy of Westville Boys’ High School and began Further Studies Maths in Grade 10 – despite maths not being his strongest subject at the time. Today, he is studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Pretoria, having built confidence, resilience, and problem-solving skills through academic challenge.

Starting Without Being “Good at Maths”

Ty is upfront about where he started.

“I was never very good at maths when I was younger,” he explains.
He finished Grade 9 with around 68% – a mark that causes many learners to rule out Further Studies entirely. Instead of opting out, Ty chose to lean in. What made the difference wasn’t talent – it was mindset, effort, and consistency.

When Maths Started to Make Sense

One Further Studies topic stood out early on: integration.

By engaging with the concept at a deeper level, Ty found that his core school maths became smoother and more manageable, not harder. “Further Studies helped my normal maths a lot – everything started to flow better.” This is a common experience: advanced learning often strengthens foundations rather than overwhelming them.

Learning to Push Past Comfort Zones

For Ty, the real value of Further Studies went beyond content.

It taught him how to:

  • Step outside his comfort zone
  • Persist when work felt difficult
  • solve problems independently
  • Grow in confidence through challenge

Balancing boarding school life and extra academic commitments wasn’t always easy. “There were evenings where I had to put the fun aside and go to class,” he says. “But I enjoyed having something that pushed me further.”

One of Ty’s biggest mindset shifts was reframing maths completely.

“Maths is a game,” he says. “Either maths beats you, or you beat it.”

Instead of avoiding difficulty, Ty decided to take it on. He worked harder – not because he was naturally good at maths, but because he wanted to improve. That effort paid off. Over time, his maths mark improved from the high 60s into the low 80s, and then further with focused work and support. “It really is possible if you put your head down,” he says.

Skills That Matter Beyond School

Now studying Mechanical Engineering, Ty reflects on what Further Studies really gave him. “At the end of the day, it isn’t about the maths. The skills matter more.” Problem-solving, discipline, resilience, and confidence – these are skills he now uses daily at university. “It’s a great asset to have when you leave school.”

For parents, this is often the most important takeaway: Further Studies is not just about marks, but about preparing learners for the demands of life after school.

Ty also highlights the importance of learning alongside others. “It really helps having people around you who are also pushing themselves.” That shared environment – learners challenging themselves together – helped keep him motivated and accountable.

Thinking About Further Studies?

Ty’s Further Studies experience is a powerful example of how a Further Studies Maths student story is often less about natural ability and more about mindset, effort, and support. Ty’s journey is a reminder that Further Studies isn’t about being the best – it’s about being willing.

If you’re a learner who:

  • Enjoys a challenge
  • Wants to push beyond the standard curriculum
  • Is prepared to work consistently
  • Wants to feel more confident heading into university

Then Further Studies may be the right next step.

And for parents, it offers a structured, supported way for learners to develop academic maturity, resilience, and readiness for what comes next. Applications are currently open, but the window to get started is closing.
